For our esteemed guests of the Corinthia St. Petersburg Hotel, who seek to comprehend the true soul of St. Petersburg, we present with special respect one of the most vivid and emotional buildings in the city - the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ, better known as the Savior on Spilled Blood. This is not just a temple, it is an architectural poem frozen in stone, smalt and paints, telling a tragic and majestic page of Russian history.

The Savior on Spilled Blood is the brightest and, perhaps, the most expressive example of the Russian style (or pseudo–Russian architecture) of the late XIX - early XX century. Its appearance is strikingly different from the classical austerity of most St. Petersburg buildings. Multicolored onion domes studded with multicolored enamel and gilding, intricate facades decorated with tiles, mosaics, kokoshniks and carved stone create a fabulous, almost toy-like appearance that evokes involuntary associations with St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, but at the same time has its own unique St. Petersburg character.

However, the true, breathtaking wonder of the temple is hidden behind its bright walls. The Savior on Spilled Blood is rightfully considered one of the largest mosaic museums in the world. Almost the entire interior of the cathedral, with an area of more than 7,000 square meters, is covered with magnificent mosaic panels. These shimmering smalt paintings, created according to sketches by prominent Russian artists – Vasnetsov, Nesterov, Vrubel and others – shimmer in thousands of shades, depicting biblical subjects, saints and scenes from sacred history. Once inside, you find yourself in a space where light plays on the smalt pieces, creating a feeling of unearthly beauty and awe.

The temple was built on the site of a tragic event – the fatal injury of Emperor Alexander II, which occurred on March 1, 1881. That is why it is not only a functioning temple and museum, but also a magnificent memorial. Inside the cathedral, under a special podium, a fragment of the pavement and the Catherine Canal remains, on which the emperor's blood was shed, which makes visiting this place especially poignant and historically significant.

Visiting the Savior on Spilled Blood is a deep aesthetic, historical and emotional experience. This is a place where you can feel not only the greatness of Russian culture, but also touch important moments of history. The special acoustics, the play of light on the mosaics, the feeling of age–old memory - all this creates an unforgettable impression that will stay with you for a long time.

For your maximum comfort and enrichment of impressions, we recommend that you set aside enough time for a visit to slowly review all the details.
